It is with heartfelt respect and gratitude that we present In Loving Memory of Lee Long Looi — an exhibition honouring the life, artistry, and enduring spirit of one of Malaysia’s most distinctive painters.
Lee Long Looi’s work carries a rare, lyrical grace — an elegance that fuses the fluid lines of Eastern tradition with the compositional freedom of Western modernism. Whether rendered in watercolour, batik, or mixed media, his figures radiate serenity, poise, and a quiet but profound humanity.
Born in Kedah in 1942, Lee’s journey took him from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore to the studios of New York, and eventually to international recognition. He painted across continents, exhibited alongside leading artists, and saw his works enter prestigious collections and auctions worldwide. Yet, despite such success, Lee remained humble — a man who believed that every work should be fresh, alive, and in tune with the spirit of the universe.
This exhibition brings together works that span his creative life — from delicate batik-inspired forms to richly layered mixed-media compositions. They reflect his deep connection with nature, his belief in art as a spiritual dialogue, and his resilience in the face of personal challenges.
As we remember Lee Long Looi, we also celebrate the joy he found in painting, his generosity as a mentor, and the quiet poetry he left on canvas. His art, like the man himself, continues to inspire — a reminder that beauty, harmony, and truth are timeless.
